Tuscaloosa, Cullman, Huntsville, Rainsville, & Gadsden, AL (2011)
A widespread and violent tornado outbreak, known as the 2011 Super Outbreak, occurred in April 2011 across the Southern, Midwestern, and Northeastern United States. In Alabama, four of the tornadoes that struck were rated EF5, the highest rating possible on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which evaluates tornados based on destructiveness. In total, an estimated 344 people lost their lives, with 239 of those deaths in Alabama.This event was the most expensive tornado outbreak and one of the costliest natural disasters in United States history with total damages exceeding $10 billion.
